The History Behind This Name

As written down by the people named at the end.

A Qwathi history (amaxhosa.wordpress.com) records the amaQwathi as an independent nation founded by Mtshutshumbe kaMthetho, who split from the amaXesibe and settled in the Mqanduli area of Thembuland roughly three and a half centuries ago. The descent is given as Xesibe, then Ntozabantu, Ndzuza, Miyana, Bimbi, Nondzaba, Hlabe, Mthetho, and Mtshutshumbe.

They settled at their present capital of Engcobo during the reign of King Dlomo of the abaThembu, about 1680. The nation divides into many clans, among them amaDikela, amaTshaba, ooSdindi, ooBhlangwe, amaNzolo, imiNcayi, amaNtondo, amaKhombayo, amaVumbe, amaBangula and ooS'ximba.

Its chiefs include Stokwe kaNdlela and Dalasile kaFubu, both remembered for resistance to colonial rule. Wikipedia separately records that King Rharhabe died of wounds taken campaigning against the amaQwathi about 1787.
