What Was Written Down
Stayt records Nethengwe's old village at Shakhadzi and a move, two generations before 1931, to a stronghold where the line remained the only independent Vhatavhatsinde chief; the family had a country-wide reputation as medicine men, and Stayt says the MaKhwinde avoidance taboo had lapsed for the Thengwe chiefs because of that power. Luonde lists Nethengwe among the Vhatavhatsindi's prominent chiefs. Magoma lists Nethengwe among the groups from which the Venda descend.
