About This Record

What Was Written Down

Junod records from Perestrello's 1554 report a king Nyaka whose land the Zembe river separated from Tembe's, and says his dynasty seems then to have ruled a larger area before being confined to the island that bears his name, perhaps by Maputju's campaigns. Mathebula and Mokgoatsana describe a Nyaka kingdom along the coast from northern KwaZulu-Natal to Maputo, in existence by the end of the fourteenth century, as the homeland from which the Hlengwe migrated north. Recorded from the sources named on this entry; the wording here is Sibaya's own.
