What Was Written Down

The Mamba claim common origin with the royal house: Simbimba Ndlela makes Mamba the first-born son of Ludvonga and a brother of Hlubi and Dlamini, and says they entered through the Ngwavuma breach in the Lubombo. They hold their own lesser incwala, a mark of special status. Bonner describes them as the natural heirs to Sobhuza I's power in the south after he moved to the Mdzimba area. Nineteenth-century rulers named are Maja I and Bhokweni (died 1940), succeeded by Matjane II; a succession contest between Maloyi and Pholile is recorded, with Pholile executed for dancing an incwala song out of season.
